The Mineral Industry Research Organisation (MIRO) is a leading international collaborative research and technological development (RTD) facilitator and provider of project management services to the minerals and related industries.

Since 2002 MIRO has managed the Mineral Industry Sustainable Technology Programme (MIST) on behalf of Defra as part of the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF). MIST provides a basis for implementation of focussed research and development activity aimed at supporting achievement of ALSF objectives. The programme provides funding support for R&D projects that address priorities defined in the scope of MIST.

MIST is established to provide a mechanism for defining research requirements and implementing research, development and demonstration projects in accordance with the second objective of the ALSF ‘Promoting environmentally friendly aggregate extraction and transport’.

The objective of MIST is ‘to reduce the environmental effects of mineral extraction through development, promotion and implementation of sustainable technologies’.

MIST encourages research and development in five key areas of activity related to mineral extraction:
  1. Environmental assessment procedures and tools
  2. Impact mitigation and management
  3. Site design, and operation & closure
  4. Knowledge and technology transfer
  5. Optimising resource value

Project reports are available for viewing in the Reviews and Reports section of this website, there is also a dedicated MIST programme website to be found at www.mi-st.org.uk.
