ALSF PROGRAMME – 2005/2008
In North Somerset there have been 33 projects undertaken, the
grants for which have, for the most part, been used to improve
existing footpaths and bridle paths but which have also
providing links between existing public rights of way and
recreational amenities.
Virtually all projects have increased the range of activities
for which the pathways can be used - for example, cyclists and
horse riders, as well as walkers, can now take advantage of the
improved access to woods and places of interest.
In most areas these improvements have also meant that wheelchair
users have access to facilities previously unavailable due to
paths not being suitable for them. One project was entirely
devoted to providing a disabled access to a local nature reserve
with associated gates (to replace stiles) and information
boards.
Local people have been involved in many of the projects; for
example, children from a local junior school planted shrubs and
daffodils alongside the footpath which had been created in one
of the projects.
From the projects already completed it is apparent that the new
facilities are being consistently used and are proving to be
very popular with local residents and visitors alike.
