The Sustainable Land-Won and Marine Dredged Minerals Programme
(SAMP)
was established by the Department for Communities and Local
Government (formerly the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) in
November 2002. The Programme contributes to delivery of the
second objective of the ALSF: ‘Promoting environmentally
friendly aggregate extraction and transport’.
The Programme is designed to encourage research and development
on the environmental aspects of aggregate extraction with
particular emphasis on projects that support a wide range of
mineral planning related issues.
To provide direction without being too prescriptive the
Programme scope was defined in terms of five priority themes,
these being:
| Theme A: |
Impacts of Aggregate Extraction on the Marine
Environment. |
| Theme B: |
Basis for Regional & Local Environmental Assessments
of Aggregates Policies. |
| Theme C: |
Dissemination of Good Practices for
Community Involvement & Liaison in Respect of Aggregate
Operations. |
| Theme D: |
Preparation & Dissemination of Training
Information for Stakeholders in the Aggregate Planning
Process. |
| Theme E: |
Development & Initial Implementation of
Advice on Good Practices in Environmental Management of
Aggregate Sites for Small & Medium Sized Enterprises
(SMEs). |
Management of the Programme was undertaken by the Mineral
Industry Research Organisation (MIRO) a specialist minerals
research management organisation.
Project reports are available for viewing in the Reviews and
