Jaw crusher   Crushing device consisting of one near-vertical fixed crushing plate and an inclined mobile plate which moves to increase/decrease the gap, thereby crushing material caught between them

K

Karst   Terrain and features formed on and within highly soluble rocks (e.g. limestone) through the process of dissolution (e.g. solution-widened fissures, cave systems, dissolution hollows etc)

Karstic Aquifer   An aquifer characterised by karstic features, and in which groundwater movement is dominated by conduit flow

LA90,T   This is the noise level in dB(A) which during the sampling interval T, was exceeded for 90% of the time. As with LAeq,T, the interval (e.g. 1 hour) should be defined

LAeq,1hr   This can be considered the 'average' sound pressure level in dB(A)) over a 1 hour period. This is often the measurement used in setting limits and known as the noise equivalent level

LAeq,T   This can be considered the 'average' sound pressure level in dB(A)) over a period of time, T. Formally, it is that continuous sound pressure level in dB(A) which, over time T, would have the same acoustic energy as the measured sound

LAmax,T   This is the maximum sound pressure level in dB(A) over an interval of time T

LAmin,T   This is the minimum sound pressure level in dB(A) over an interval of time T

LAN,T   This is the noise level in dB(A) which during the sampling interval T, was exceeded for N% of the time

Landbank   A stock of valid planning permissions for the winning and working of minerals. It is composed of the sum of all permitted reserves at active and inactive sites at a given point in time, and for a given area to ensure continuity of production for a set number of years

LCA   Life Cycle Assessment. A technique to investigate and quantify the environmental impacts of a product or service throughout its life

LGAP   A local geodiversity action plan (GAP) (q.v.)

LIDAR   LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is an optical remote sensing technology that measures properties of scattered light to find range and/or other information of a distant target

Littoral Zone   The portion of a water body (e.g. ocean or lake) extending from the shoreline to the greatest depth occupied by rooted plants

Local Development   This constitutes the lower tier of the statutory Development Plan

Local Development Frameworks   The local development framework is a non-statutory term used to describe a folder of documents, which includes all the local planning authority's local development documents (comprised of development plan documents, which will form part of the statutory development plan, and supplementary planning documents). The local development framework will also comprise the statement of community involvement, the local development scheme and the annual monitoring report

Logistics   Managing the flow of goods, information and other resources between the point of origin and the point of consumption including packaging, storage and transportation

Long-term management   For minerals sites - land management of a site (beyond the aftercare period) to ensure maintenance of a high-quality end-use

Low permeability barrier   A body/vertical wall of low permeability material installed in the ground to restrict groundwater flow. Such barriers may be used to restrict the flow of groundwater into the cone of depression created by dewatering, thereby limiting the extent of the zone of influence. For this purpose, adequate barriers can often be constructed using locally available materials (e.g. clay from strata encountered beneath the mineral or from overburden material, if that is sufficiently cohesive). In other cases, especially where there is a need to exert greater control (e.g. to contain contaminated groundwater) it may be necessary to use imported lower permeability clays, bentonite slurry and/or a suitable geomembrane

LWA   This is the Sound Power Level (SWL) rating for a particular piece of equipment or plant, which can be used o predict Sound Pressure Levels (SPLs) at given distances
