Consultation on information for the public on mineral working

The United Kingdom Minerals Forum is a body convened by the Confederation of British Industry to discuss issues and problems related to mineral working and to provide advice and information. It consists of representatives from the industry, government departments and agencies and environmental non-governmental organisations. The Forum convened a Working Group to consider and prepare information for the general public on minerals issues.

The material is provided here for public consultation so that it can be improved. The aim is to provide helpful unbiased and readily understandable information so that minerals issues can be discussed in an informed way.

It is organised into 5 text files:

1. Introduction
2. Minerals and their uses
3. How mineral operations are undertaken
4. How the planning and environmental permitting systems work
5. How communities can influence policies, applications and operations

Separate files of illustrations are provided for sections 1, 2, 3 and 5. The aim would be to integrate these with the texts when both have been improved following consultation.

1. Illustrations
2. Illustrations
3. Illustrations
5. Illustrations

We would welcome responses from anyone who is interested in minerals issues but particularly from the general public and residents groups.

Please your comments by 5th January 2012.

It would be helpful if you could make your comments and criticisms fairly precise, referring to section, page, paragraph and lines and suggesting revised wording and content where you think it is necessary. Please let us know:

• What is good?
• What is bad?
• What should be added?
• What should be removed?
• What needs clarification and more explanation?
• What can be summarised more succinctly?
• Which illustrations are good?
• Which should be replaced?
• What additional illustrations would help?

or any other points that you think are relevant

All responses will be considered and the text and illustrations will be revised so that the finalised material can be made fully available for use by the end of March 2012.
It will then be updated as necessary.
