A major overview project funded by Defra's Aggregates Levy
Sustainability Fund, www.sustainableaggregates.com was launched
on 12th March 2008 by Jonathan Shaw MP at English Heritage’s
prestigious venue Wellington Arch in London.
The launch was opened by English Heritage’s Chief Executive
Simon Thurley who talked about the importance of ALSF research,
in particular on the historic environment.

Jonathan Shaw MP then launched the Sustainable Aggregates
website and reviews undertaken in 2007, and spoke of the
excellent ALSF research undertaken to date. Jonathan Shaw is a
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at Defra and his
responsibilities cover marine and fisheries, landscape, inland
waterways, rural affairs and local environment quality. He is
also the regional minister for the South East. In this role he
represents regional interests in the formulation of central
government policy, acts as a champion for the region and
facilitates a joined up approach across government.
Duncan Wardrop, non-executive director of MIRO and Mineral
Resources Manager of Lafarge Aggregates responded by raising the
issue of future priorities of the ALSF and the importance of
research.
The website and associated review documents distil the knowledge
gained from over 360 projects funded by the ALSF through MIRO,
CLG and English Heritage between 2002 and 2007. The reviews
provide a summary of the most up to date research and projects
illustrating good practice, whether funded by the ALSF or from
other sources, and have been written by recognised experts in
their fields and reviewed by industry representatives and other
key stakeholder groups. The reviews have been designed to be
easily accessible and to be widely shared. The website also
provides a portal for all the MIRO ALSF funded research
undertaken to date, and links to other web based resources
containing ALSF projects.
