Land and Visual Impact (Post-operational Phase)
A full discussion on the issues and good practice concerning the impact of quarrying on the landscape and visual environment can be found in the Operational section.
Many of the post-operational aspects of landform and visual impact will be determined by the initial design of that site and implementation of that design during operations. When an application is made to open a quarry, a restoration scheme will have to be agreed before permission is granted. This means that the minimisation and mitigation of impacts on the landscape and visual environment at the operational and post-operational phases are very closely linked, and determined to a large extent by the baseline assessment and design at the pre-operational stage. These aspects clearly overlap, and so are dealt with together.
The ALSF Review "Creating Environmental Improvements through Restoration" L0115 obviously relates specifically to this post-operational phase, It usefully summarises the environmental impacts and benefits of restoration which are examined in all ALSF projects, including effects concerning landscape and visual. Information from this review is included in the operational section.
